IT Travel Tips: Mobile Phones

As you prepare for your travels, do not overlook the following security tips and to amend your phone’s data settings.

Data roaming charges without a plan are extremely expensive, and to ensure that your device does not inadvertently connect to cellular data streams, we recommend you carry out the following change of settings, prior to leaving the Kingdom.

Also note that third-country communication is very expensive. That means, for example if you are in Country B and calling Country C (not KSA) these rates can be above 35 SAR/min.

Below are screenshots on how to perform the following actions:

  1. Turn off cellular data and changing the APN
  2. Turn off location services

Turning off cellular data and changing the APN:

For the iPhone system, go to Settings and click on Cellular Data.
If it is “On” (green), then turn it off.
Then, click on Cellular Data Network.
Change the APN to “web2abcd”, then exit the screen.
Turn off the Location Services and exit the Settings menu.
