Invest in our planet

The world’s stocks of natural assets are estimated to contribute more than US$125 trillion to the global economy every year. Smart companies are discovering it is no longer a choice to go green while growing long-term profits — sustainability is the true path to prosperity. We must act and embrace the benefits of a green economy.

Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement, which began in 1970. Earth Day is a day to recognize the Earth’s measurable and unmeasurable value. As we deal with a triple planetary crisis – climate, biodiversity loss and pollution – we should all come together to find meaningful solutions.

At KAUST, we invest in our planet by enabling scientific education, fostering sustainability-driven discoveries, and investing in ecotechnological innovation and community awareness. Our world-leading research translates to action-oriented solutions and empowers our students to become sustainability champions for our planet. By investing in both the people and solutions, we contribute to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and a globally sustainable future.

Earth Day at KAUST

We are ready to celebrate Earth Day with many exciting activities open to the community.

Name a street at the Coral Probiotics Village (CPV) and win an underwater tour

Thursday, April 20 to Thursday, April 28

To celebrate Earth Day 2022, the Red Sea Research Center (RSRC), in partnership with Community Life, is launching an exciting contest open to all KAUST community members. Participants are encouraged to suggest a creative name for a new street at the Coral Probiotics Village (CPV) and a small text about why Earth Day is such a historical mark for the global environmental movement. The best street name and text will be selected by a jury, and the winner will be invited, along with their family*, to visit the CPV (snorkel or scuba) and watch the team put the new street name sign underwater to “inaugurate” the street. The next two top street name suggestions will also be awarded a chance to join the trip (+1 extra guest*). Submit a name by 11:59 p.m. April 28.  *Dependent on maximum vessel capacity.

Waste to Art’ exhibition
Sunday, April 24 and Monday, April 25 | 09:00 a.m. – 03:00 p.m.
Location: Campus Library – Sea View

Some of our daily waste items have the potential to become an art piece on a wall instead of ending in a trash bin if one is creative enough. The Facilities Management-Waste Management team is partnering with the Jeddah-based artist Meedo Creisat to showcase some of his waste to artwork. The ‘Waste to Art’ exhibition demonstrates that some of our daily trow away materials can be transformed into playful, meaningful, and thought-provoking objects. Come and explore a creative approach to resource circularity and recycling.

About the artist: Meedo Creisat focuses on projects that reflect his love for history and passion for environmental sustainability, having won several achievement awards including the Saudi Art and Culture award and the Saudi Environmental Society award. Creisat calls his work ‘Meedo Redo’ and the technique is incredibly fascinating, as textures and patterns are built up by layering plastic strips and smashed cans and patches on top of each other. Up close, the artworks have a highly abstract and often linear or striped look, but once you step back, the full portrait emerges.
