CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected center for scientific research. During the 2019 Winter Enrichment Program—and for the first time in the Middle East—we are honored to exhibit the LHC CERN Tunnel at KAUST.
This is your opportunity to follow a Tunnel guide training program where you will gain scientific and communications skills. After completion of training, which will be given by Joao Pequenao, a CERN Media Lab expert and scientific communications expert, you will receive a certificate.
About the LHC CERN Tunnel
Concepts like “the influence of Higgs Field on matter” and “particle acceleration and collision” can lead to explanations that are often hard to understand and even harder to retain. By immersing yourself in this fully interactive gaming experience, the LHC Interactive Tunnel will manage to bridge the gap between science education, interactive media and information visualization, creating an entertaining and memorable tool for learning.
What will you learn in the training?
Requirements:
You will need to be on campus and available during WEP to act as a CERN WEP guide during the two-week program. Potential visitors of the LHC CERN Tunnel might include: in-Kingdom school visitors, industry visitors, VIP guests and the media. Further details will be shared during the training sessions offered. You will only be required to attend one training session on campus and can choose between either:
- Thursday, January 10 from 11:00 am to 5:00 p.m. (lunch provided) OR
- Friday, January 11 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 p.m. (lunch provided) OR
- Saturday, January 12 from 9:00 to 2:00 p.m. (lunch provided)
- A general knowledge about what CERN is (the world’s greatest particle physics research center and how they collaborate with others)
- Particle accelerators: what are they and how they work
- The nature of matter: why things are the way they are and how we study this
- Challenges for the future in particle physics and science in general
- How to explain complicated concepts in an understandable way
- Public speaking: improve your presentations and present science to the general audience and the media
- Time management
- Dealing with crowds
