Champions of the Mangroves

On the occasion of World Environment Day, a group of 25 excited children from G5 and K3 gathered for a reading of a new book. Led by Ollie Osprey the king of the mangroves, the children filed into the library and sat down for a reading of the book by author Rebecca Kent.

Ollie is the main character of a new illustrated children’s book that tells the story of creatures living in the KAUST mangroves. Ollie and his friends Katie, Dragonfly, Hadi, Kay and Turtle strive to clean up the mangroves and put rubbish in its place. Their habitat is in danger because of rubbish—a conservation issue that is very much top of mind for researchers and community members alike, particularly the environmentally conscious students from TKS.

The book’s main mission is to promote biodiversity and nature conservation. The book was introduced by HSE Director Robert Kilford, and HSE Biodiversity Coordinator Brian James. Fifty pairs of mesmerized eyes and attentive ears listened to Rebecca Kent, author and illustrator, read the story. Each of the children was given a signed copy of the book and was sent back to class to become Champions of the Mangroves too.

The book was produced by the KAUST Health, Safety & Environment department in partnership with the writer and illustrator Rebecca Kent. It will be available for purchase at Matjar in fall 2018 in English and Arabic with all proceeds going to support nature conservation and biodiversity causes.
