Two teams of women from Thuwal joined KAUST community members and took part in the KAUST Chef Challenge, an event organized as part of KAUST Sustainability Month, on February 8.

The format of the competition followed the popular cooking show “Top Chef.” Competitors had 10 minutes to choose from a range of ingredients and then an additional 30 minutes to create dishes and present them to the judges. Dishes were judged on four dimensions—the use of healthy ingredients, taste, presentation and minimum food waste.

The dishes challenged competitors to use their culinary creativity and inventiveness without recipe books. Having previously attended the Health & Wellbeing workshops delivered by KAUST Health, the women were keen to apply their recently acquired skills in healthy cooking. The teams were pleased to receive compliments from the judges on their dishes and hope that the event will be repeated.

Thanks go to KAUST Sustainability for organizing such an entertaining evening. Social Responsibility is able to draw on its knowledge of Thuwal and the surrounding areas to encourage and coordinate participation by our neighbors in events like these, thereby extending the range of community engagement activities and programs that the department organizes throughout the year.
