The KAUST International Conference on Physics and Chemistries at Hydrophobic Interfaces

Hydrophobic interactions play crucial roles in many natural and industrial processes, including protein function, water desalination and oil recovery. At the nanoscale, hydrophobic interactions dictate the structures and functions of essential macromolecules like DNA, while at the macroscale, they enable many species of animals and plants to stay dry even when in direct contact with water. Despite their importance on both the nano- and macro-scales, a comprehensive understanding of hydrophobic interactions remains elusive.
In response, the Water Desalination and Reuse Center (WDRC) has convened the KAUST International Conference on Physics and Chemistries at Hydrophobic Interfaces to identify key challenges in the field and to form new alliances to surmount them.
Thirty renowned experimentalists and theorists will share their insights at the conference. Participants will learn about various physical and chemical aspects of hydrophobic interactions, including short- and long-range forces, molecular structuring of water, the role of hydrogen bonding, density fluctuations at the surface of water, nanoscale bubbles, specific ion effects and rates of interfacial reactions.
The conference will also host 30 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from around the world who will present research posters. Informal panel discussions, poster sessions, and coffee breaks will catalyze audience participation. Scientists from WDRC’s industrial partner organizations will also attend.
This conference will be of broad interest to the KAUST community, and we encourage KAUST faculty, scientists and students to participate. KAUST students and postdoctoral fellows are invited to present relevant posters. Please submit abstracts to Dr. Naval Subramanian (contact information below).
