The KAUST Al-Khawarizmi Masterclass Series offers specially designed lectures from world-renowned experts in STEM fields. Masterclasses broaden graduate and postgraduate students’ curricula with enriching talks at the frontiers of scientific research and technological innovation.

On Sunday, September 3, the Masterclass Series will focus on semiconductor photonics. During the online event, experts and enthusiasts will explore the cutting-edge field of advanced optoelectronics and its diverse applications.

Four online classes will be held throughout the day led by KAUST photonics specialists Professors Boon Ooi, Kazuhiro Ohkawa, Andrea Fratalocchi and Yating Wan. The closing class of the day will be a panel discussion.

Key topics covered include:

  • Semiconductor laser-based lighting and visible light communications.
  • Artificial intelligent optoelectronics hardware for neuromorphic computing.
  • Optoelectronic micro-devices for novel AR and VR displays and integrated silicon photonics.  

In covering these varied topics, the class offers an in-depth understanding of semiconductor photonics and its implications for information technology, health care and computing.
