Appropriate Usage of Library Resources

Dear University Library users,

Several times over the past six months, some publishers have restricted our online access to their publications due to individuals in our community exceeding the download limit. Recent access cut-off to the American Chemical Society (ACS) publications is an example.

What is excessive downloading? Publishers do not publish their threshold, but generally, it is systematic downloading that exceeds the number of articles and the speed of download, which you might expect from typical library research.

It is inconvenient to have campus access to resources cut off while each infringement is investigated. Continual violations jeopardize long-term access to
the valuable resources.

It is important for us to abide by the Library’s e-resources usage policy as it takes time to negotiate and recover access with electronic publishers, and loss of access affects everyone in our community.
