International World Water Day is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

As one of the KAUST’s four research thrusts, water is a focus each day of the year, especially for our colleagues at the Water Desalination and Reuse Research Center. Led by Center Director, Gary Amy, their important work is highlighted in this month’s special issue of The Beacon newspaper.

This international day to celebrate freshwater was first recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and the United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day.
