HSE road safety update: road system around TKS – exciting new updates

Significant changes have been made to the road system around the TKS Gardens campus to improve road safety for students over the past few months. Our community’s response has been positive overall, with some suggestions on further enhancing the road system around TKS. After listening to valuable feedback from our community and allowing sufficient time to adjust to the new system, HSE is pleased to share that planned enhancements will take place over the December period in collaboration with Facilities Management.

Summary of the new updates:

  • The entire cycling lane will be painted green. The cycling lane remains a dedicated two-way cycle/micro-mobility (for bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters) in the inner lane on the roads around TKS. All other modes of transport, including gas scooters and golf carts, must only use the outer vehicle lane.
  • Bike symbols will be painted white on the road surface inside the cycling lane to show that it is a demarcated lane for cycle/micro-mobility users.
  • Motorized vehicles can temporarily straddle the cycling lane under certain circumstances only when it is safe to do so. Valid reasons for temporarily straddling the cycling lane include accessing authorized lay-by parking areas or avoiding an obstruction in the road, such as a broken-down vehicle or stationary waste collection truck. Drivers must look for cycle/micro-mobility users before temporarily straddling the cycling lane to ensure both lanes are clear before entering the cycle/micro-mobility lane. Micro-mobility users always have the right of way in the cycling lane.

Previous changes, such as the Nakhil Lane closing between TKS and the Gardens Daycare/ECC3/FCSC, will remain closed to all vehicle traffic but open for the cycle/micro-mobility lane. Also, the reduced speed limit of 30kph remains in place. Remember, a slower speed is a safer speed.
