Abstract
The upcoming seminar will delve into the significance of birds in preserving the health of ecosystems and the measures taken to uphold robust bird populations on the KAUST campus and across the Kingdom. The seminar will shed light on the diverse bird species on the campus, their habitat requisites, and the essentiality of monitoring and safeguarding their numbers, alongside the ongoing conservation initiatives in place at KAUST. The talk will also address the obstacles faced by bird populations in urban settings like habitat depletion, pollution, and climate change. Additionally, it will emphasize the importance of actively supporting bird conservation efforts in our community.
About the speaker
As the Biodiversity Coordinator for the Health Safety and Environment department of KAUST, Marika is tasked with developing and executing sustainable strategies to preserve and safeguard the region’s biodiversity. With almost ten years of experience, Marika has primarily worked with NGOs on biodiversity and conservation projects. She is committed to raising environmental awareness and has actively participated in community outreach and engagement campaigns, as well as environmental education and voluntary actions to promote sustainable practices, address environmental issues, and remediate impacts. Marika holds a master’s in environmental science and management from the University of Ghent, Belgium.
