Email security enhancements: Introduction of External Tag

As part of the Information Security team’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the security and integrity of KAUST’s digital ecosystem, an upgraded feature for the KAUST email system has been implemented.

The new enhancement is specifically designed to assist you in identifying emails originating from external sources and to strengthen our defense against phishing attempts.

Any email from outside the KAUST domain will be automatically tagged with [EXTERNAL] in the subject line. Like the [BULK] tag previously announced, this straightforward and effective measure will enable you to promptly recognize emails originating from external sources.

It is essential to remain vigilant against phishing attacks, which often employ deceptive tactics by impersonating familiar addresses to trick users into divulging sensitive information. However, not all emails marked as “[EXTERNAL]” are malicious. Legitimate emails from business partners, academic collaborators, and personal acquaintances may also carry this tag. Exercise your usual discernment and caution when interacting with these emails, particularly when asked to provide sensitive information or directed to external links.
