The Harbor area has undergone some recent changes that have improved the area and the daily lives of restaurant-goers from across campus. As an extension to Discovery Square on the shores of the Red Sea, the Harbor area has become a popular place to hang out, meet friends, go for an outdoor dinner or take a stroll to admire the harbor and the Beacon in the distance.
Ride or walk on the art side
This October, Community Life introduced the Harbor Walk Shuttle, a 20-seater electric cart that provides convenient access to Harbor Walk from the Discovery Square and Harbor Walk car parks. One can easily reach this area to admire the colorful contemporary artwork of renowned artists curated by ARTmosphere, the art wing of the Harbor buildings’ upgrade project.
Share a meal, sit back and relax
The area is much appreciated for the variety of restaurants and cafés the area offers to the community. variety of restaurants and cafés it offers to the community. Kudu sandwiches, Tim Hortons and Domino’s pizza opened their doors in October, adding to the existing restaurants that opened earlier in March. The The wide variety of cuisines has dishes to tease the tastebuds of anyone: Mexican cuisine at Los Amigos, Mediterranean at Mefalfal, Lebanese at Bonjourain and health-conscious cuisine at Healthy Choice. The outdoor seating area is lively and nicely designed with steps, fountains and beautiful surroundings. It’s worth spending some quality time with family and friends there to sit and relax.
Another addition to the area is Greens Fresh Produce, the fruit and vegetable shop previously located next to King Abdullah Grand Mosque. Now located close to the Harbor Library, Greens is your one-stop-shop for local produce, dried fruits and specialties.
Time to celebrate
On the evening of October 8, The KAUST community was invited to celebrate the new restaurants and cafés along Harbor Walk. Many enjoyed great food and exciting activities for the whole family, and attractive prizes were won.
The celebrations carried on in November during the first Community Market that was filled with high-end art, crafts, buskers, kids’ activities and more. It was a perfect opportunity for community members to browse through the booths featuring artwork and crafts from artisans of the KAUST community and Jeddah, while the kids had fun with bouncy castles and face painting.
The Harbor area will undergo some major improvements in the upcoming years as new student housing will be redesigned and new shops and restaurants will open to create a lively city center for the whole community.
