Students for Sustainability are proud to announce that their first Awareness Week focused on microplastics will be moving online! Please join us as we dive into the heart of the single use plastic problem!

Sunday, April 5 — 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

An Introduction to microplastics and make your own reusable bag with Nicole Havlik

This first session of the week aims to give an introduction to the single use plastic problem and gives a deeper understanding of what microplastics are and how they impact the environment. This talk will be followed by a workshop on how to make your own reusable bag!

Monday, April 6 — 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Documentary screening and discussion with Liubov Gapa

Join us for a watch party screening the documentary Broken. This documentary examines how the rush to make things cheap or convenient for consumers has led to a lot of intended and unintended consequences for the planet. The screening will be followed by a group discussion.

Tuesday, April 7 — 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Research talk with Susann Rossbach

Susann is a third year Ph.D. candidate in Marine Science working on the ecology of the Tridacna giant clam holobiont in the Red Sea. Her talk looks at the ingestion of microplastics by giant clams and evaluates their importance as a sink for this pollutant. This is a great way of diving into some of the research carried out by the RSRC!

Wednesday, April 8 — 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

“What a waste! Myths and Facts about Recycling” with Liubov Gapa

How much of our trash actually gets recycled? Reduction and reuse are the most effective ways you can save natural resources, protect the environment and save money. Recycling and remaking products takes huge amounts of energy and is not always the right thing to do! Join this interactive discussion followed by a workshop on how to reuse items in your home.

“How to Reduce your Rubbish”- Our Journey to Zero Waste!

Grace and Jess are two KAUST Community members on a mission to become waste free! Join this narrative and learn more about the zero waste trend and how Grace and Jess are managing to do this at KAUST.
