World Health Day: April 7

Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of concern for WHO. World Health Day is a global campaign, inviting everyone – from global leaders to the public in all countries – to focus on a single health challenge with global impact. Focusing on new and emerging health issues, World Health Day provides an opportunity to start collective action to protect people’s health and well-being (http://www.who.int/world-health-day/en/).

The theme for 2012 is “Good health adds life to years.” The focus is how good health throughout life can help older men and women lead full and productive lives and be a resource for their families and communities.

The World Health Day activities begin today, with a screening booth in the Administration Building (building 16) this morning and a Tai Chi class and weight management workshop this evening. Be sure to check out all that is being offered! Click here to view the full schedule.

Daily Tips for Healthy Living

(from familydoctor.org)

Make the choice to be healthy: Most of the major causes of death (such as certain cancers, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and injury) can be prevented in part by making healthier lifestyle choices.

Quit smoking: Smoking causes 440,000 deaths in the United States every year. More preventable illnesses (such as emphysema, mouth, throat and lung cancer, and heart disease) are caused by tobacco use than by anything else. The sooner you quit, the better.

Eat healthy: Heart disease, certain cancers, stroke, diabetes and damage to your arteries can be linked to what you eat. By making healthier food choices, you can also lower your cholesterol and lose weight.
