The World Cup Is On. So Are the Scammers.

The Information Security Department reminds the KAUST community to remain vigilant during major global events such as the FIFA World Cup, where heightened online activity can increase the risk of cyber threats.

Why should you be cautious?

High-profile events like the World Cup often attract cybercriminals who exploit public interest through fraudulent ticket sales, fake streaming or subscription services, phishing campaigns, and malicious websites. These scams can result in financial loss, identity theft, or compromise of KAUST accounts and devices.

How can you stay protected?

To help ensure a safe and secure experience, please follow the guidelines below:

  • You should only purchase tickets or merchandise from official and trusted vendors, and you should avoid deals that appear too good to be true.
  • You should be cautious when subscribing to streaming services and ensure they are legitimate and authorized providers.
  • You should avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments in emails, messages, or social media posts related to the event.
  • You should verify website URLs carefully before entering any personal or payment information.
  • You should use secure payment methods and avoid sharing sensitive information over unsecured platforms.
  • You should immediately report any suspicious emails, links, or fraudulent activity to AskInfoSec@KAUST.edu.sa.

Security is a shared responsibility, and staying alert during major events is essential to protecting yourself and the KAUST community.
