Space Explorers Talk this Wednesday

Members of the Executive Committee of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) are visiting Saudi Arabia for 25th ASE Planetary Congress held in Riyadh. As part of the ASE mission to promote and support education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, three members of the Planetary Congress will present a lecture this Wednesday. Come hear first-hand about their space exploration experiences and about evolving space technologies, followed by a Q&A session.

Miguel López-Alegría is a Spanish-American astronaut and a veteran of three space shuttle missions and one international space station mission. He is known for having performed ten extra-vehicular activities (EVAs) so far in his career, presently holding the second longest all-time EVA duration record, and having the longest spaceflight of any American at the length of 215 days.

Arne Christer Fuglesang is a Swedish physicist and an European Space Agency astronaut. He was first launched aboard the STS-116 Space Shuttle mission on December 10, 2006, making him the first Swedish citizen in space. He is a former physicist at CERN and taught mathematics at the Royal Institute of Technology before being selected to join the European Astronaut Corps in 1992. He has participated in two space shuttle missions and five spacewalks, and is the first person outside of the US or Russian space programs to participate in more than three spacewalks.

Helen Patricia Sharman was the first Briton in space and the first woman to visit the Mir space station aboard Soyuz TM-12 in 1991. She received a B.Sc. in chemistry at the University of Sheffield and a PhD from Birkbeck, University of London. She worked as an engineer for GEC in London and later as a chemist for Mars Incorporated working as a Research Technologist on ice cream and chocolate. Currently, she works as a broadcaster and lecturer specializing in science education.
