To ensure the continued safety of all community members, Facilities and Community would like to remind everyone of the KAUST Traffic and Vehicle Safety Policy. This policy sets the minimum rules, requirements, and responsibilities that all community members must observe for safely operating vehicles and bicycles on our roads.
Key highlights of the Traffic and Vehicle Safety Policy are as follows:
- No person under 16 years of age shall be permitted to operate any kind of motorized vehicle including scooters, buggies, quad bikes and golf carts
- Drivers of motorized vehicles (16 years and older) must hold a Driver’s License
- Drivers and passengers of motorcycles, scooters, quad bikes and other similar vehicles should wear a proper motorcycle helmet and/or any other safety protection equipment while driving
- Cyclists under the age of 16 are required to wear a bicycle helmet at all times to reduce the chance of serious head injury
- Cyclists must ride on the right hand side of the road and obey the traffic lights and stop signs at intersections, and all other road markings and signage
- When cycling after dark, cyclists must ensure that their bicycles are equipped with appropriate front and rear lights and reflectors
- Where a “STOP” sign is posted or a flashing red light is indicated, the driver must reach a full and complete stop prior to entering the intersection
- Flashing amber lights entitles a driver to proceed with caution. If there is no traffic control device (no traffic light, stop sign or yield sign) at an intersection, the driver must yield the right-of-way to vehicles coming from the right side
We all need to work together to keep our community safe and secure. It is important that all dependents are also familiar with these rules and regulations. Please click here to download the complete policy.

Could an addition be made to the STOP sign / Flashing red light / Red light information?
Amendment: not only should the driver come to a complete stop, the driver must also give right of way to all vehicles. I have noticed that drivers may stop, then proceed without caution for oncoming traffic. I can only guess those drivers may think that the sign only means they must stop, and then are free to go once doing so.
