Recreation Services Update

Facilities and Community is committed to providing premium quality recreation services and expanding the current range of recreation and sporting services offered to the community. In the coming weeks, new staff and services will be introduced, starting with the launch of a new Summer Camp in early June.

As part of our continued commitment to providing premium quality recreational services to the community, we are delighted to announce that, effective as of June 1, Coastline LLC will be our new partner for recreation services at KAUST.

Coastline has been running our Marine Services operation since 2009, continuously enhancing the marine and beach recreational experiences.

In addition to maintaining and enhancing the current services offered (for example, tennis programs, martial arts programs, etc.), we have recruited additional team members to introduce new sports, leagues and activities that we believe will significantly enhance recreational offerings for the KAUST community.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Saudi Oger recreational team for all their dedication and hard work over the last seven years. We are confident that Coastline will continue to build on what has been achieved and take the KAUST recreational facilities to the next level of excellence.

Please join us in welcoming the new recreational teams to our community. We look forward to your continued support and feedback.

Kind regards,

Facilities and Community team

Dear Facilities and Community team,

The current Martial Art we have on campus are kick boxing and Taikwando, which mostly stress on the physical training and fighting skills. Would you please consider to bring Karate into KAUST? As Karate stresses on both the inner strength and physical health, which is good to develop the discipline and balance health in kids and young people. Thank you.

Glenn Carney May 4, 2016 - 11:13 am

Dear Ming

Thank you for your comment with regard to Karate. Our new recreation partner has recruited a mixed martial arts expert who will deliver a variety of classes to our community and will not just focus on Taekwondo and Kick Boxing.

Hi is there a possibility that we can continue with the current gym and fitness schedule without any interruptions and without changing the instructors? Members of the community have built up good relations with these fitness instructors, and we are very happy with them, and would like to see their classes / Personal Training sessions continue. Kind regards.

Glenn Carney May 4, 2016 - 11:36 am

Dear Lomare

Thank you for your comments. Please note the schedule will be enhanced with a variety of extra classes available to the community. We have not communicated that any of our current schedules will change and therefore all current popular and well attended classes will remain as usual. Fitness class attendance will be closely monitored and whenever necessary the schedule will be amended accordingly to ensure new and exciting industry trends are introduced when possible. Regarding your question about the instructors please note all new instructors are fully qualified, experienced and certified to deliver a quality fitness program to the KAUST community via Coastline our new recreation partner .

Thank you for your reply, Glenn.

Is the whole schedule going to change? Some classes are super popular, and I wonder if the schedules and classes will continue the same just with a different instructor.

Glenn Carney May 4, 2016 - 11:38 am

Dear Laura

Thank you for your comments, please refer to my post above and I hope this answers your queries.

Erica May 4, 2016 - 11:36 am

Will there be any aerobics / Step / Zumba / Pilates classes in the ‘enhanced’ services offered by Coastline? These are popular (especially with ladies), however, have not been provided by F&C for a long time now.

Glenn Carney May 4, 2016 - 3:00 pm

Dear Erica

Thank you for your comment. We will deliver a variety of fitness classes to the community in line with the qualifications and certificates the new fitness professionals have. I can assure you this will be a significant increase compared to the limited classes we currently have available. I can confirm our new instructors will certainly be certified to deliver the same schedule and much more such as Pilates and Aerobics etc etc.

It is part and parcel of living at KAUST. We must be aware that it is a transient environment and will never remain continuous in any way. People come and go. This is also the way with the fitness schedules and the trainers.

Joanna May 4, 2016 - 1:15 pm

Can you add Pilates class?

Glenn Carney May 4, 2016 - 3:01 pm

Dear Joanne

Please refer to post above.

Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for the update! Are there any plans to improve the gym facilities? I know there are many people who would like more weightlifting equipment and some of us have actually resorted to purchasing a few items for the gym ourselves.

If there are any plans to get more gear, it would be great if the gym users were consulted in order to determine what is needed.

Hi,
Will there be changes in the Arabic classes in the Harbor Library?

Glenn Carney May 5, 2016 - 12:00 pm

Dear Lidia

Arabic classes will continue at the Library.

Lidia May 10, 2016 - 2:38 pm

Thanks for answering so soon. Are you keeping the same teachers?, we are currently taking morning classes with Orouba.

Glenn Carney May 10, 2016 - 4:54 pm

Dear Lidia

Our new partner is Coastline and they are recruiting new staff for the positions. The service will not be interrupted.

I am under the impression that current fitness instructors have been offered only 50% of their former wages under the new contract. While you probably cannot comment on individual contractual issues, I would like to put in a plug for the qualified individuals we already have working in Recreation to be able to earn a living wage. Coastline will not be able to attract & retain high-quality professionals and keep up strong programming if personnel are not offered attractive packages.

Glenn Carney May 8, 2016 - 8:45 am

Dear Johanna

Thank you for your comment. The information you have received is totally incorrect and the Lens is not the media to discuss such issues. Please feel free to call me at anytime and I can give you the accurate information.

Joanna May 11, 2016 - 8:27 am

Good morning,
I am writing on behave a group of ladies that participate in activities out side KAUST, first Mon of the month and second Tue of the month. Transportation to those activities become very expensive. Is it possible to provide transportation or give us a descanted price? Some times is 7 to 10 of us.
Ladies of WBG and Mermaids groups will be very grateful for your consideration and support.

Glenn Carney May 12, 2016 - 5:10 pm

Dear Joanna

Thank you for your comment. The Recreation Department does not have the resources for such requests. I recommend you contact the transportation department who may be able to assist you further.

Valeria May 12, 2016 - 11:37 am

Hello,
is it possible that the teacher of Arabic classes at Harbor Library, Ms. Orouba, would continue conducting Arabic classes? She is an amazing teacher with excellent skills and we all would love to continue studying Arabic with her!

Thanks!

Glenn Carney May 12, 2016 - 5:04 pm

Dear Valeria

Thank you for your comment. Coastline are our new recreation partner and will be hiring new staff for their operation. Please note the service will continue.

Jana May 15, 2016 - 4:31 pm

Hi,

Any chance to have with Coastline a new schedule for children for the coming year that would include ballet classes? Thank you!

Glenn Carney May 15, 2016 - 5:25 pm

Dear Jana

Thank you for your comment. The ballet classes are currently operated by the Movement SDG and Recreation will continue to support all SDG’s moving forward. The Movement SDG currently offers ballet classes to the community.
