HSE Road Safety update: Parking safety

We often park our vehicles without much though, sometimes several times a day. While it may seem routine, parking incorrectly can pose road safety risks to others. To keep our roads and community safe, please follow these key parking guidelines from the KAUST Road Safety Code:

General parking rules

  • Do not park in areas that could obstruct or impede emergency services or equipment.
  • Park in designated parking areas, facing the direction of traffic.
  • Avoid parking in:
    • Bicycle lanes or alternative vehicle routes.
    • Spaces reserved for others, including emergency vehicles, delivery, taxi, or golf cart use.
    • Any location that unnecessarily obstructs traffic.
  • Never leave children or animals unattended in vehicles.
  • Turn off your engine and take your keys when leaving your vehicle.
  • Do not park on pavements or sidewalks—keep them clear for pedestrians.

Where parking is prohibited

Avoid stopping, standing, or parking in places that could cause hazards or block the flow of traffic, including:

  • Sidewalks, crosswalks, and intersections
  • Marked cycle lanes
  • Opposite or beside roadworks or obstructions
  • In front of emergency exits or near fire extinguishers and AEDs
  • EV/golf cart charging bays (unless you’re using a permitted vehicle)
  • Signposts or road markings prohibit parking.

Parking for persons with disabilities

  • These spaces are clearly marked with signs or road markings.
  • Only vehicles displaying a valid disability permit from KAUST Security or the KSA Government may use them.
  • The authorized holder of the disability permit must be present and enter or exit the vehicle when the parking privileges are being used.
