Guided Bird Walks in March

Health, Safety and Environment is offering three Community Birds Walks in the next few weeks. Come along and enjoy watching migratory birds passing through KAUST. During this period we would hope to see around 40 different species on a single walk.

Many of the birds will be on their Spring Migration northwards. These birds are returning to their summer breeding grounds across Central Asia and Eastern Europe, with some flying all the way to the Arctic Circle. KAUST has become an important stop-off for many migratory birds. They stop to rest, feed and recuperate before continuing their journeys. We shall particularly be hoping to see beautiful Demoiselle Cranes, an endangered species that regularly stops on the mudflats near the Monument. We will also be looking carefully at the edges of the mangroves, hoping that a crake or rail might reveal itself momentarily. These shy species are rarely seen in their breeding areas but are regularly seen at this time around KAUST.

To sign up for the walks place go to the HSE calendar on the KAUST portal. If you would like to bring guests on the walk please do so. They do not need to be signed-up as well. Our walks usually last between 90 and 120 minutes. Binoculars are provided for those who do not have their own.
