Global Internet Connection for Faculty, Researchers, and Staff

IT Services is pleased to announce that effective Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. all faculty, researchers, and colleagues will have automatic access to our upgraded global internet connection through our dedicated link to Amsterdam. This connection has much greater capacity than the connection through our local service provider.

This new connection is provided to accommodate for exponential growth in demand for global internet access from our academic, research, and business communities.

Action for you to take (after 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 4) to ensure automatic access to this enhanced internet service:

  • Confirm that your network proxy is set to ‘Auto Proxy Discovery’ or ‘Automatically Detect’ for all of your wired and wireless devices connected to the KAUST network. If you are unfamiliar with how to confirm that this setting is correct, please click here for specific directions. If you require any further assistance please contact the IT Help Desk (808 0910).
  • You will be prompted to enter your existing KAUST user ID and password for access authorization.

When off-campus, you will no longer be required to make a proxy configuration change to access external internet links.

Users who do not authenticate properly, or who are not part of the authenticated user groups, will continue to use the community/schools/public internet connection provided through a local service provider.

How to still use the non academic connection from home to access entertainment websites which are now blocked by Kaust (not by KSA as some of them are famous in the kingdom) ?

The best thing to do is to contact the IT Help Desk (808 0910) and they can assist you with this issue.

KAUST firewall is more restrictive than the governmental one – many more (not just entertainment) sites are blocked. Even the Harvard list of blocked sites (allowed by the KSA firewall) is blocked 🙂

Unblocking/blocking request is forwarded to your “line manager” for approval and then back to the IT.
