Enrichment in the Spring: Program of the day – Pioneering in Science

An inspiring concert by Abdulrahman Mohammed, three appealing exhibitions and a large crowd in a relaxing atmosphere were a beautiful way to launch our week of pioneers and celebrate Saudi heritage and culture.

Today’s program will take us to the world of pioneers in science with two exceptional keynotes in the Auditorium (bldg 20).

  • 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. – Laurent Lantieri, plastic surgeon who performed the first full-face transplant, will talk on the topic Hand and Face Transplantation: Restoring the Bodies to Restore Humanity. Lunch will be served before the lecture from 11:45 a.m.
  • 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. – Alan Lightman, physicist and writer whose research has been on general relativity, radiation processes and stellar dynamics, will discuss great scientific discoveries in the 20th century and the scientists responsible for those discoveries. A signing session of his book The Discoveries: Great Breakthroughs in 20th-Century Science, on which this lecture is based, will take place after the keynote in the Auditorium (bldg. 20) lobby. His book will be for sale as well.

Right after the lunchtime keynote, the opening of the personal exhibition of Mbongeni Buthelezi, a pioneer in plastic painting, will take place in the University Library at 1:30 p.m. Do not miss it.

Make sure you also visit the two exhibitions in the Auditorium (bldg. 20) lobby:

  • Into the Empty Quarter, photos by W. Thesiger
  • 1000 Days of KAUST

Also do not miss the community exhibition “Celebrate Saudi Arabia” in the Conference Center (bldg. 19) level 1.
