WEP 2016 Keynote Lectures

 

One of the highlights of the Winter Enrichment Program are the evening keynote lectures. For WEP 2016, we are proud to welcome some of the biggest names in science and business. Here’s a look at some of the keynotes coming for WEP 2016:

Monday, January 11

“The Next Generation of Superconductors” with Dr. Suchrita Sebastian
Royal Society University Research Fellow in Physics, University of Cambridge

L’Oreal UNESCO Women in Science Fellow Suchitra Sebastian is particularly interested in an extraordinary physical phenomenon known as superconductivity. In this lecture, she will discuss her work towards finding novel superconductors that operate at accessible temperature, dramatically increasing their technological applicability.

Tuesday, January 12

“How Can Global Oil & Gas Industry Survive the Next 85 Years?” with Dr. Helge Haldorsen
Director General, Statoil Mexico

What will the energy industry look like in the decades to come? Dr. Helge Haldorsen will look at the long-term global outlook for energy and discuss the dilemmas and the competitive forces affecting the gradual global switch from oil and gas to other energy sources.

Sunday, January 17

“A Physicist in Hollywood: the Science of ‘Interstellar'” with Professor Kip Thorne
Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, Caltech

If you’ve ever wondered about realism in Hollywood sci-fi films, you’ll love this lecture. Co-author of the seminal textbook “Gravitation,” astrophysicist Kip Thorne will look at his work as science advisor for the blockbuster film “Interstellar.”

Monday, January 18

“60 Years of DNA” with Dr. James Watson
Chancellor Emeritus, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Dr. James Watson is a Nobel Prize winner who is best known for being part of the team that first uncovered the double helical structure of DNA in 1953. More recently, he has been a driving force behind the Human Genome Project. Join him to look at how his discoveries have shaped our lives.

Tuesday, January 19

“Stripping down Science” with Dr. Chris Smith
Science Podcaster and Medical Consultant, Cambridge University

It takes special skills to talk about science to a wide audience. Dr. Chris Smith will give a fascinating insight into his work as a pioneering and world-leading science podcaster.
