We thank all KAUST community members for following the essential changes to the Traffic and Vehicle Safety Policy that are designed to keep us safe.

November’s policy highlight focuses primarily on helmets for riders and motorbike passengers, quad bikes, scooters and bicycles. As per the Traffic and Vehicle Safety Policy, approved motorcycle helmets must be worn when riding motorcycles, quad bikes and scooters. All helmets must comply with recognized international standards.

Approved bicycle helmets must be worn when riding a bicycle. Bicycle helmets are not permitted when riding motorbikes, quad bikes and scooters.

Something needs to be done about the number of cyclist who continue to ride at night with no lights. This is getting worse, not better. Why is there no Security presence early evening, say 7pm to 8pm around key areas, like Tamini and Nawras Lane? The majority of cyclists in these areas have no lights or any form of illumination. Compounded as they are usually loaded with shopping bags on the handle bars at the same time as trying to cycle.

I think there should be a giveaway for lights at the fire station and the schools.

Thank you for your question. Over the past year, numerous efforts have been made to support the bike light awareness project, including distribution of over 200 sets of bike lights. At this point the mandatory use of bike lights and helmets has been policy for nearly 6 months and HSE is now targeting previous resources towards new arrivals and similar awareness campaigns. On campus Banaweer is likely to have some available or retail outlets such as Wheels in Jeddah are advisable options if you do not have such lights at this time. Best wishes.

If you impose the rule of wearing bicycle helmets on the community, why don’t you ask the community if they need it or not?
I believe it’s the right of each person to decide about his/her own safety, if it doesn’t affect others, which a helmet does not.
Thank you!
