The first genome of a coral reef fish

Sequencing the genome of an organism allows scientists to investigate its unique genetic make-up, its evolutionary links to other creatures, and how it has adapted to its environment. KAUST researchers have sequenced the first reef fish genome, the blacktail butterflyfish (Chaetodon austriacus), an iconic Red Sea species considered to be an ‘indicator’ species for coral health. Gentle sensors for diagnosing brain disorders

Muhammad Hussain and Aftab Hussain from the KAUST Integrated Nanotechnology Laboratory and Integrated Disruptive Electronic Applications Laboratory wanted to develop a soft and flexible sensor that could be placed on the surface of the brain within the intracranial space, providing better contact and reducing the risk of damage to tissues. Click here to read more.

Fiery explosions of hot metal on water

The explosive reaction of a liquid metal dropping into water has been captured with high-speed cameras by researchers from KAUST. The images reveal how the explosive formation of water vapor around the liquid metal influences the shape of the metal as it hardens. For certain metals, perfectly-shaped microbeads are created during the powerful reaction with water. Click here to read more.

KAUST and SABB launch multi-university startup accelerator

The Saudi British Bank (SABB) and KAUST are launching the KAUST-SABB University Entrepreneur Accelerator “TAQADAM.” The program aims to help early stage university student and faculty entrepreneurs at Saudi universities develop their concepts into high-potential startups. Click here to read more.

KAUST Artists in Residence Program 2016

A three-month art and science collaboration on the ecology of the Red Sea. Swiss artists, Marie Griesmar and Sandra Kühne successfully applied for the artists-in-labs residency at KAUST. They are going to work on their art projects within KAUST research groups from mid-September until mid-December, 2016. Click here to read more.
