Recreation Services Update #2

Facilities and Community is committed to providing premium-quality recreation services and expanding the current range of recreation and sporting services offered to the community. There is so much going on in Recreation, so we wanted to summarize what you can look forward to in the next six months and beyond:
  • Harbor Sports Club Bowling Alley – As you can see, the first wave of arcade machines has arrived with more arriving in early August.
  • Get Active website – The webpage is going through a review and is being updated on a daily basis. We are excited to launch the new Get Active Calendar, your one-stop shop for everything going on from sports to activities, self-directed groups, Discovery Cinema timings and much more.
  • Equipment – New loan out items are here and are being unpacked this week. There is also a range of new inflatables due to arrive early August for use in all the Recreation clubs.
  • Activities – We will be introducing a range of new activities. The pool inflatables will be in one of the pools most weekends. We will also be taking the inflatables to King Abdullah Monument, with dates and times to be confirmed. From the end of July, Quiz Night will now be at the Safaa Racquet Club. Watch out for the special bowling nights. Please keep checking the Get Active Calendar for updates, and we will also post updates on The Lens and the KAUST Community Facebook page.
  • SPORTLINE sports store – This is next to the Dive Shop in the Harbor Sports Club. New stock is arriving soon, and we will be reviewing the stock on a regular basis
  • Sports coaching – Some of you will have seen the new coaches on our Facebook postings or in the clubs. Our coaching program will be available to adults and children and will cover a multitude of sports. This schedule will be released in early August, and we have tried to offer more of a balanced program. You will notice that we will offer coaching on the weekends and during the week.

  • Opening and closing times – All times have been reviewed. The HSC, IRC and Safaa Racquet Club are all open later, and some of the sub-facility timings have also changed. For example, Playland is now open until 9:00 p.m. New times are on the    Get Active webpage.
  • Discovery Cinema – The cinema has a new projector and new timings. We are installing the new projector in the cinema this week. We have also reviewed all the timings to try and cater to everyone’s needs.
  • Safaa Golf ClubFootgolf, new academy course and a new tee box is coming on the 5th hole soon. The new tee box will bring in the upgraded water feature.
  • Televisions in the Racquet, Island and Harbor Clubs – We have already subscribed to beIN sport for the 2016 UEFA European Championship and the Copa América at the Harbor Sports Club, so you can now enjoy all the Premier League, La Liga games and much more. We have also relocated one of the TVs to the Safaa Racquet Club. We will also be moving a pool table to this area, so those who live in the Safaa Gardens can come for some dinner, a game of pool and watch a game on the big TV.
  • Soft play at the Safaa Racquet Club – We will be introducing a dedicated soft play area in the Safaa Racquet Club after Ramadan.
  • Gymnastics to the Safaa Racquet Club – Due to the growth and popularity of the gymnastics program, we will be relocating this to a permanent location in the Safaa Racquet Club. This will take effect from next week.
  • Sports leagues and tournaments – You will notice a range of tournaments and leagues scheduled for the next 12 months. These will complement the existing leagues and tournaments, but you will notice new additions, such as new squash and tennis ladders, football leagues and bowling leagues, plus more new tournaments over the next 12 months.
  • Art & Ceramics studio – Both are due to be completed by September/October. They will be based in the Island Recreation Club and will be available for all artists in the KAUST community to use.

Kind regards,

Facilities and Community team

When will sailboats be available for rent in the Harbor like they are at South Beach? We have a beautiful harbor and yacht club but no sailboats. We should have weekly sailboat races in the harbor every Thursday night followed by dinner at Al Marsa.

All sounds great above.

Am I right in thinking we now have just one lifeguard covering both the main pool and the children’s pool at IRC. Over the last week I have only seen one LG in attendance at any point in time. The movement of the LG chair, I assume to improve visibility, does nothing towards the safety aspect. The area is too big and too diverse to be the responsibility of just one LG. What happens in the children’s pool when Dad gets into trouble in the main pool?

Great pool facilities – would be nice to have some shade from the sun though. Not much point in having all the pool inflatables if there is nowhere for the parents to get cover from the heat. Are the shades bought last year all broken?

Dear Nick, thank you for raising your concerns, we take safety comments very seriously. The chair has been moved to increase visibility of the entire pool area and recreation are RLSS compliant. We will continue to monitor all swimming operations and apply further measures as and when required. We are reviewing the amount of shading in all pool areas.

Is there a schedule anywhere online of which Euro 2016 games will be shown on the big screen at the HSC?

Thank you!

Tim
