Thank you Xian, we did consider developing the app for Blackberry Users, but found, that within the KAUST employee community the adoption of Blackberries was significantly lower than iOS and Android.
However, we are soon to be rolling out a web enabled version of the app in the coming weeks which will work on Blackberries and other devices. We will announce its availability through TheLens

Did you know that our e-mail addresses are publicly announced through this application!
Publishing our departments and titles is one thing, but e-mail address is supposed to be an on-demand information given to people who need to have it.

Hi Pelin,

One of the biggest frustrations staff and community members have raised with us, is difficulty in finding staff contact details, while on the go. The convenience of the app on your phone, allows you to contact staff while out and about, without having to call someone to check the spreadsheet, or search email signatures for phone numbers.

The decision to release KAUST Staff Directory information was carefully considered and widely consulted, this includes the release of email addresses. To find anyone’s record you need to submit a minimum of 4 characters into the search. We are currently looking at options for staff to opt in/opt out (this will only be for external directories) with required entries for internal directories, but in the meantime if there is a concern about a specific email/communication you receive via this channel, please contact the IT Helpdesk as usual.

Please continue to let us know what other apps and services you would like to see mobile at scmobile@kaust.edu.sa, for help and assistance with the app contact the ithelpdesk@kaust.edu.sa

Hi Vanessa,

Thank you for your reply.
I do understand your reasons, but you can at least implement a Portal ID-Password protected gateway to the Contacts menu. If this menu is solely for the KAUST community members, as you mentioned, this simple solution will make everybody happy.

Cheers,

Hi Pelin,
We have received a lot of positive feedback about the visibility in regards to reinforcing our presence as a reputable International University, many universities publish their directory examples include Stanford, Duke and QUT.
We are currently focusing our efforts on allowing individuals more granular control over their own data and the visibility of this information. Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to be included in these discussions, we always need “end user” feedback.

Great suggestion Majed and thanks for your feedback.
The initial focus was to enable the staff business directory and common help and service desk numbers, we would be very keen to develop an internal KAUST community directory which students and community members could voluntarily add their personal phone numbers and home phone numbers and addresses to.
We are currently considering options for Phase 2, please let us know if this option would be a valuable addition.

We are gathering all of your suggestions here

I tried to email this request to scmobile@kaust.edu.sa as suggested in the post above, but the delivery was denied.

Please add students to the Directory on the KAUST app. I feel leaving us off is a huge oversight and sends the message that students are not valued members of the university. We are active members of the research and academic sides of this university and being able to connect with each other and staff is vital to not only our success, but the overall success of the university. This is a UNIVERSITY after all- where would we be without students?

It is common at top universities in the US (specifically I checked MIT, Stanford and Johns Hopkins) and probably in other countries as well to be able to publically search for university members, including students, and provide their school email address. I do not see any reason to exclude us.

Hi Jenna,

Great idea! For this phase we just focused on enabling the Staff database, but the feedback we are getting is definitely in line with a whole of university approach you are suggesting.
We are currently gathering ideas for Phase 2, one of which is to allow individuals to have more granular control around what is visible and what is hidden with their own contact data.
This could possibly be extended to allowing students the option to be included.

Thanks for the suggestion and please keep them coming, you are welcome to use this blog for suggestions until we can sort out the email issue…
