KAUST FM demonstrates its commitment to responsible Hazardous Waste Management

KAUST FM demonstrated its commitment to environmentally responsible hazardous waste management through a recent educational initiative by organizing a “Follow your Waste” tour of an offsite hazardous waste treatment storage and disposal facility (TSDF) on October 24, 2023.

The aim was to showcase KAUST FM’s dedication to duty of care and enhance understanding of how KAUST handles hazardous waste, from transportation to treatment and disposal. This is particularly relevant, as KAUST’s research and operational activities generate hazardous waste with various characteristics that must be managed in a legally compliant, safe, and eco-friendly manner.

The tour attracted participation from key stakeholders in KAUST’s hazardous waste program, including the Sustainability Office, HSE Research Safety, HSE Environmental Office, and KAUST Health Services. During the event, attendees were given a guided tour of the TSDF, led by the facility’s operational manager, who provided detailed explanations of each step involved in the treatment and disposal of KAUST’s hazardous waste.

In 2022, KAUST’s hazardous waste program successfully treated and disposed of approximately 120 metric tons of hazardous waste, primarily generated from the university’s research activities, in a safe and legally compliant manner.

KAUST FM reaffirms its unwavering dedication to responsible hazardous waste management. The “Follow your Waste” tour exemplifies our commitment to the safety, well-being, and environmental sustainability of our community. With the continued support of our stakeholders, FM remains steadfast in its mission to protect our environment while safeguarding the health and welfare of all who call KAUST home.
