IT Security Department – Work Station Safety

Dear Community Members,

Sometimes the simplest thing can go a long way in protecting both you and the organization. Locking your workstation will prevent others from accessing your personal and work related files/emails while you are away from your desk. An unattended and unlocked workstation could allow an untrustworthy individual to have access to the computer and gives them the ability to:

  • View, read, edit or delete information on your computer.
  • Gain access to KAUST resources using your credentials.
  • Send or forward emails on your behalf.
  • Install harmful software on your workstation.

Please make locking your computer a habit whenever you leave your desk.

To lock a device on Windows:

  • Use the shortcut Win+L
  • Or CTRL+ALT+DEL and select “Lock this Computer” or press Enter.

To lock a device on Mac:

  • Click on the Lock Icon on the top right corner and click “Lock Screen”
  • To enable this feature please do the following:

Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app
Go to Preferences and select “Show keychain status in menu bar”

  • (⌘) Command+ (⌥) Alt+ Eject to immediately sleep your Mac, make sure that your mac is set to ask for password on login.

To lock a device on Ubuntu:

  • Use the shortcut Win+L
