Fire Wardens are trained for moments exactly like this
On August 12, 2026, Certified Fire Warden Muhammad Younas Zafar Hussain responded to an e-scooter lithium-ion battery fire inside a KAUST building. His prompt action helped prevent injury and limit property damage until KAUST emergency services arrived and the fire was fully extinguished. In recognition of his response and commitment to fire safety, Muhammad received a Certificate of Appreciation for Keeping KAUST Safe.
Having completed the KAUST Fire Warden training program prior to the incident, Muhammad was able to apply his training when it mattered most. His response demonstrated the important role trained Fire Wardens play at KAUST in recognizing fire hazards, taking appropriate initial action, and helping protect people and property until emergency responders arrive.
E-scooters are not permitted inside KAUST buildings
Lithium-ion battery fires involving e-scooters are a recognized fire safety concern globally. A battery fire can develop rapidly and produce intense heat and hazardous smoke. For this reason, e-scooters must not be ridden, charged, parked, or stored inside KAUST buildings.
Safe actions
- Keep e-scooters outside KAUST buildings.
- Do not ignore signs of battery damage, overheating, swelling, unusual odors, or smoke.
- If you see a fire or smoke, raise the alarm and immediately contact KAUST Emergency Services on 012 808 0911.
- Never dispose of lithium-ion batteries in regular waste. For safe battery disposal, contact the C&C Helpdesk on 959 from a KAUST landline or 012 808 0959 from a mobile.
