The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department appreciates the fun and convenience of the latest “must-have item,” the Hoverboard. To ensure the safety of you and your family, we draw your attention to recent international
government warnings regarding major safety risks, including issues with the plug, cabling, charger, battery or cut-off switch.
- Never leave the device charging unattended (especially overnight):
a faulty cut-off switch (designed to stop
the battery from continuing to charge once fully charged)
or a plug without a fuse, as seen in many products, could lead
to the device overheating, exploding or catching fire.
- Check the device: things to look out for include the
shape of the plug – the first unsafe products identified by
international trading standards offices often had a
clover-shaped plug. Also, check the device for markings or
traceable information, such as the name and contact details of
the manufacturer and/or importer.
- Don’t be fooled by a bargain: Are the prices are incredibly
low? If they look too good to be true, they probably are, and we
would strongly advise against the purchase.
Please note that Hoverboard use is prohibited inside campus buildings, within recreational facilities or on KAUST roads. HSE recommends that you wear appropriate protective headgear while on a Hoverboard.

There are many children using skateboards on the roads especially on the way to school. This seems to be a very unsafe practice and hazardous for the skateboarders who are often also wearing earphones and for drivers of cars/scooters.
Are skateboarders ‘allowed’ to use the road rather than the pavement?
