Guided bird walks

Health, Safety & Environment Department (HSE) proudly introduces bi-monthly guided bird walks for the community. KAUST is a haven for birds; since its opening in 2009, over 240 different bird species have been recorded within KAUST. The area is particularly good for water birds with herons, waders and gulls all occurring in some numbers. The mangroves hold such an unusual species as Little Bittern and Mangrove Reed Warbler. Twelve species of heron alone roost regularly at the golf course. The community gardens and golf course fairways hold many other species both resident and migrant.

Join us in one of our bi-monthly walks by registering on the HSE website.

On the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day (May 10), HSE is hosting a bird counting event to commemorate the day, and raise awareness about “Healthy Planet for Migratory Birds and People.” An estimated 5 billion birds make the annual migration from Europe and Asia, with a similar number doing so from North America. KAUST lies on a major bird migration route along the Red Sea with over 150 migratory species known to have stopped here since KAUST opened. If you would like to participate in this event please contact Brian James, HSE Biodiversity Conservation Coordinator at brian.james@kaust.edu.sa

I would be very interested in participating in one of the bi-monthly bird walks however, at 5 pm I am still working. Is there any possibility to start at 5.30 pm?

Hi,

I have the same comment as Anne. We need time to leave our jobs and get to the place. 5:30 would be the ideal.

Thanks,

Ana

Same issue with the 5pm start. Also, where is the start?

We will adjust upcoming sessions to take the 5 pm comment into account. Starting point for the upcoming guided tour is at the golf course, just go to the reception and ask for the tour, event if you come at 5:30 pm.
