The second week of WEP 2017 is packed with must-see events around the engaging theme of “Pushing the Limits: Challenging Engineering and Science.” Here is a selection of the many highlights of week two:

Sunday, January 15: Young Scientists

Keynote lecture: Choosing to Fly: Examining Fear, Risk and Resilience by Steph Davis

Steph Davis is a top climber and base jumper. She will share her deep understanding of the need to adapt to one’s environment and the skills crucial for survival and success in any walk of life.

Monday, January 16: Deep Sea

Keynote lecture: From Exploration to Exploitation? Opportunities and Imperatives in the Deep Sea by Cindy Lee Van Dover

5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Cindy Lee Van Dover is an ecologist and explorer and a professor at Duke University. She will explain what can be found in the depths of the ocean and explore the growing interest in mining the seabed.

Keynote lecture: Preparing for the America’s Cup: A technological and a human challenge by Martin Fischer

Head of the design team of the French Challenger for the 35th America’s Cup Groupama Team France, Martin Fischer will describe the technological and human endeavors to develop and prepare the boat and the crew.

Science Fair
DIscovery Walk

The Science Fair is a great opportunity to learn about the science at KAUST, and will feature many different booths manned by The KAUST School (TKS) students, graduate students and scientists.

As an entrepreneur and trend-spotter, Estelle will look at the responsibilities that come from the scientific choices we make and the dilemmas the science and technology community will have to resolve.
