water.colours: a Red Sea biodiversity exhibition

The latest ARTmosphere exhibition curated by Solkem N’Gangbet has opened in the KAUST Harbor Area. This exhibit is sponsored by the Red Sea Research Center and features 12 stunning photos of species living in the Red Sea.

The Red Sea, particularly south of the Gulf of Aqaba and along the Saudi Arabian coast, has been vastly unexplored and little is known about its biodiversity. As coastal areas of the Red Sea are increasingly developed with an eye to future eco-tourism, it is important to catalog the ecosystem’s biodiversity.

One of the objectives at of the Red Sea Research Center at KAUST is to explore the Red Sea and catalog its species. This goal inspired a seven-day Red Sea expedition in May 2017. The expedition collected over 3,000 specimens—including more than 50 species that had not previously been recorded. You can learn more about the expedition here.

The photographs are located along the pathway that leads out to the mosque.
