All motorized vehicles used to transport people or materials only within the KAUST road network (e.g., golf carts, buggies, scooters) are now required to be issued with and display an official KAUST Vehicle Registration Plate. This requirement does not apply to existing private/commercial vehicles that already have KSA/GCC license plates intended for use on public roads outside KAUST.
The authorized vehicle retailer at KAUST, Banaweer, shall explain the inspection/registration procedure and other requirements to customers when a new motorized vehicle is purchased or acquired. Existing owners are requested to approach the retailer to have their vehicle(s) inspected, and be advised on the new registration procedures.
A grace-period up to the end of January 2013 will be given to owners to complete the new registration/installation process. Every vehicle should, by that time, have a unique and standardized plate secured to the rear of their vehicle.
Please be reminded that motorized vehicles with KAUST registration plates are not allowed on any public roads outside of the university.

How much? How long is registration life of machine or yearly? If yearly is there a charge each year?

No charge for the registration plate or having it fixed to your vehicle. It will apply for the ‘lifespan’ of the vehicle. There may be a cost associated with obtaining the Inspection Certificate, as this is a basic MOT/safety check to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy
Is there a cost? When a person leaves KAUST and passes/sells the motorized vehicle to another KAUST member, what procedure is in place to transfer the names etc.. What is the quality control on the process to ensure correct linking of the vehicle to the correct owner.
It seems unusual to have a private company do this when it is a security issue.

No charge for the registration plate or having it fixed to your vehicle. Any owner leaving KAUST should advise ID Services (when returning KAUST IDs)that he/she has relinquished vehicle ownership. The new owner should obtain a new Inspection Certificate from Banaweer then follow the ‘registration process’. Security have been working with Banaweer to encourage safety and vehicle roadworthiness
Please can you clarify if this is for commercial use vehicles since the announcement reads “All motorized vehicles used to transport people or materials only”. What is the policy regarding motorized vehicles for private use i.e not used for the transporting of people and materials?

The announcement says “standardized plate secured to the rear of their vehicle” – When automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is introduced in future, will you ask us to queue again at the Banaweer and get it fixed on the front ?

The Licence Plate Recognition System (LPRS)is already operational but is designed for vehicles which operate on KSA public roads as well as the KAUST road network. The vehicles mentioned in the Announcement are intended for use only within the university. As they would not be ‘re-entering’, there would be no requirement for a front registration plate

There are no LPRS cameras in the academic campus area.
I stopped by Banaweer the other day to ask about the plates and process, two other people were there asking the same thing. The person knew nothing of the procedure. He suggested I go to the vehicle sticker office…they knew nothing and suggested I go to the Security main office. The guard at the front of the security office knew nothing, and so I was told to leave.
Can someone please find out what the exact process is to get these licences, as I (and I am sure others) have now wasted time in a run-around that has gone nowhere.

Banaweer has been commissioned to conduct vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness, and issue an Inspection Certificate. Some charges may be incurred at this stage, but there are no costs involved for issuing or affixing the registration plate.
Owners are then requested to proceed to the ID Services Office in Security Headquarters Building during normal office hours, and present the Inspection Certificate to the ID Supervisor or his designated assistant. Owners will then receive a vehicle registration plate, the serial number of which is recorded against personal particulars. The original certificate will be stamped and retained by ID Services, however owners will be given a photocopy for presentation to Banaweer, who will then affix the registration plate to the vehicle.
Banaweer (who are tasked with this process) have now been closed since 11 December. Is there any alternative process, or can we get a further period of grace before licences are required.
