Abstract: Recent research in materials and manufacturing science has created broad classes of semiconductor devices with important capabilities that cannot be achieved using established technologies. The key enabling advances include methods for synthesizing device-grade semiconductor nanomaterials, assembling them at high speeds into heterogeneously integrated formats on unusual substrates, and establishing contacts, interconnections, and interfaces to external systems. This talk summarizes fundamental and applied aspects of these approaches, with an emphasis on two specific examples: (1) microscale, multijunction solar cells for applications in utility-scale photovoltaics and portable power and (2) high performance, water-soluble electronics for applications in biomedical implants and environmental sensors.
