Travel Update on Polio Vaccination

All individuals, traveling with children who are under the age of five (5), to the People’s Republic of China arriving from Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Guinea, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Somalia, must obtain and present a valid certificate of vaccination for poliomyelitis (Polio).

Failure to present a valid certificate will result in vaccinations and possible detention at the arrivals airport.

The World Health Organization advises that all adults traveling to the People’s Republic of China (regardless of origin), who completed the routine childhood immunizations but never received a booster as an adult, should be given a single dose of inactivated polio vaccine. Any adult who never completed the initial series of immunizations should do so before departure.
