The Making of a Splash

In Communications and PR, we are often concerned about making a splash. Prof. Sigurdur Thoroddsen brings some intellectual rigor to the question in a paper, The Making of a Splash,  he authored in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics. “The splash resulting from the impact of a drop onto a pool is a particularly beautiful manifestation of a canonical problem, where a mass of fluid breaks up into smaller pieces.” Powerful new x-ray imaging reveals hidden details and the complex underlying dynamics of the splashing droplets.
