Saudi Arabia launches new international water research center at COP16

KAUST has partnered with the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) to be at the forefront of tackling one of humanity’s most pressing issues — water security. Announced during COP16 in Riyadh by the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Fadley, KAUST will host a new international water research center to address global challenges related to water security and desertification.

The center will be a leading global platform for applied research in a range of aspects related to water, including water economics, water security, water pollution, advanced technologies and digital monitoring. With KAUST’s cutting-edge facilities and MEWA’s expansive network, the initiative aims to deliver impactful, evidence-based solutions that support sustainable water management, particularly in arid regions.

Headquartered at KAUST, the center will cultivate partnerships with international organizations, government bodies, industry leaders and nongovernmental organizations. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030’s objective of promoting sustainable water resource management and strengthens KAUST’s role in addressing global environmental challenges.
