Safaa Golf Club teens win top prizes at Abu Dhabi Junior Open

On October 25, three members of our Junior Youth Golf Program traveled to Abu Dhabi to participate in the Taylormade Abu Dhabi Junior Open. With coaching from Adam Burwood, Safaa Golf Club’s resident pro, and caddying duties carried out by the competitors’ fathers, the three junior members joined 52 junior golfers (ages 10-18) from across the Middle East to see how they stacked up against the best in the region.

The competition categories were Boys Category A (handicap 0-18), Boys Category B (handicap 19+) and Girls, with the top two in each category awarded. Our junior members represented KAUST well and placed at the top of the tournament:

TOP TEN: Ameer Jasmin got off to a rough start to the competition, but turned it around to finish in the top ten by finishing two over on the final eight holes. He never gave up and his determination pushed him towards the top of the pack.

SECOND PLACE: Narrowly missing out on the first prize in the Category A, Thomas Carney came in second place, only losing by a tiebreaker, but still came back with a trophy and a prize of a new putter. Thomas can be seen at the Safaa Golf Club almost any time he is not in school.

FIRST PLACE: Gaetano (Rocky to his friends) D’Antoni took home the first place trophy and a brand new golf bag in the Boys Category B competition, by beating his nearest competitor by four strokes. Rocky also won “nearest to the pin” that came with more prizes.

Congratulations to our junior golfers for hard earned recognition! And many thanks go to Adam Burwood and the Safaa Golf Club for their dedication, and to Glenn Carney and KAUST Recreation for making this great experience possible.
