Road safety for children

KAUST Traffic and Vehicle Safety Policy

  • All occupants of Category 1, 2 and 3 vehicles (excluding Scooters, Motorcycles, and quad bikes) must wear seat belts.
  • Children and infants must be seated in a child restraint seat with a seat belt as appropriate for their size and weight that is positioned and installed as per manufacturer guidelines.

  • Children and infants riding in an affixed child bicycle seat or bicycle trailer/buggy must be firmly secured in a safety harness.
  • The driver of the vehicle is accountable for ensuring all passengers are wearing seat belts.
Seating for Children on Scooters

  • The motorcycle or scooter must have a pillion seat and footrests that the child passenger can reach with their feet.
  • The child must be able to sit astride the machine safely and hold on to the rider, the pillion handholds, or bar.
  • The Policy prohibits carrying a pillion passenger elsewhere on a motorcycle or scooter other than in the designed seat.
  • Infants and children who cannot reach the footrest are not permitted to be transported on a motorcycle or scooter.
