Paddle Safely, Enjoy Freely: Your Guide to Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding at KAUST!

At KAUST, we’re fortunate to live and work along the shores of the Red Sea. Whether you’re gliding across the water in a kayak or balancing on a stand-up paddleboard, these activities offer an incredible way to connect with nature, stay active, and unwind.

However, with great adventure comes great responsibility. Safety isn’t just a rule, it’s a mindset. As part of our commitment to fostering a strong safety culture, we want to ensure that everyone enjoys these activities responsibly, confidently, and safely.

That’s why we’ve developed the Recreational Kayaking & Recreational Stand-Up Paddleboarding guidelines, designed to equip you with the knowledge and best practices for a safe and fun experience on the water.

What’s inside the guidelines?

  • Your responsibilities as a kayak or paddleboard rider – Understanding your role in staying safe
  • Potential hazards & safety tips – Be aware of the risks and how to mitigate them
  • Choosing the right equipment – Not all are the same, pick the right one for your adventure
  • Essential & recommended equipment – Know what gear is required and what’s nice to have
  • Smart planning & preparation – Plan ahead to ensure a smooth and safe outing
  • Understanding KAUST’s navigation channel – Stay aware of designated water routes and zones

Why these guidelines matter

Unlike highly regulated activities, recreational kayaking and paddleboarding at KAUST follow a self-guided model, which means we trust our community to take responsibility by following the safety measures outlined in the guidelines. While HSE provides essential safety education and periodic checks, the key to safe kayaking and paddleboarding at KAUST lies with you.

By following these simple but important steps, we can continue enjoying these incredible activities while keeping ourselves, our community, and our environment safe.
