Our Community’s Code of Conduct

One of the best characteristics of KAUST is that it is a truly unique community, rich in its diversity, with people from many nationalities living and working together.

Alongside our own individual cultures and customs, it is important for us to be aware of and respect those of our host country.

As we approach the holy month of Ramadan, it is appropriate to remind all community members of the Code of Conduct. The University has adopted a Code of Conduct which aims to help foster an environment where we demonstrate mutual regard and respect for our host country, our colleagues, classmates, and neighbors, and helps us feel comfortable with one another.

Within this context, please remember the following regarding appropriate attire:
• The academic and administrative buildings are public areas where teaching, study, research, and other work takes place. Different cultures have different norms, and in view of these considerations, attire while on the academic campus should reflect a professional or “smart casual” appearance.
• For men, appropriate attire means a thobe, or trousers and a collared shirt.
• For women, appropriate attire means an abaya, or tops with sleeves, trousers, and skirts of modest length. Short, transparent, or revealing garments are not appropriate.
• When using community and recreation facilities, modest and non-revealing attire is encouraged. Uncovered swimwear should not be worn outside the swimming areas.

With regard to attire at KAUST, the key considerations is respect. If in doubt, please apply your best judgment and common sense. If you require further advice or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the Ask HR helpdesk at 808 2055.

As KAUST continues to grow and mature, we have the opportunity to contribute to the social fabric of this unique institution and community. With care and dedication, sensitivity and understanding, our multicultural and multifaceted community will continue to be a place where residents are proud to live and work while showing respect for other cultures.
