Orientation Expo and Bazaar 2018

As the new academic year approaches, a steady stream of new students are arriving to KAUST. Orientation activities will be in full swing. See the schedule below for a few film screenings as well as the exciting annual Orientation Expo and Bazaar.

The Orientation Expo and Bazaar will include over 60 booths of graduate student groups, professional associations, and a wide selection of KAUST offices and services. There will be a “Taste of KAUST” section with booths from all of our retail and food outlets. At 7:00 p.m., there will be live music and entertainment on the Student Plaza, in front of the Student Center, starting with Agoraphonics, a new band from the KAUST community, followed by Arabian music by local band, Firqat Al Sharqi, with special guest singer Ammar Al Shami.

This is an event not to be missed!  It is now established as one of the largest events representing all groups and services offered on campus, and it is open to the entire KAUST community. The Expo and Bazaar are part of Orientation 2018 and are organized by Graduate Affairs.

Desert Seas
Screening and Presentation by Prof. Michael Berumen

The documentary Desert Seas which was created for National Geographic by Saudi Aramco and renowned Icon Films (creators of the hit series, River Monsters) showcases the dazzling Red Sea and the wondrous Arabian Gulf. Staff from our very own Red Sea Research Center participated in the development of this stunning film. Also showing will be Guardians of the Red Sea, the story of the first-ever joint research project between the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which was filmed during the Fall o2009.

This screening is presented by Professor Michael Berumen, Associate Professor of Marine Science and Engineering at KAUST. Professor Berumen served as one of the scientific advisors during the creation and production of the film. Graduate Affairs is pleased to sponsor the presentation of this film during Orientation 2018.

Chasing Coral (movie)

Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. Divers, photographers and scientists set out on an ocean adventure to discover why the reefs are disappearing and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world. The presentation of this film, released in2017, is offered during Orientation 2018 and is sponsored by Graduate Affairs.

Albatross (movie)
Friday, August 10, 2018
2:00 p.m.
Discovery Theater, Discovery Square

Join us for a special screening of “Albatross”—a stunning visual journey by film-maker Chris Jordan—which explores the consequences of global plastics pollution in the ocean through the eyes of the Albatross population on Midway Island. This film is offered during Orientation 2018 and is sponsored by Graduate Affairs. Orientation 2018 is the first time an attempt has been made to ensure that all Orientation events are “plastic free”. Please note that this film is rated “R” (restricted) and recommended for only those aged 12 years and over.
