As the new academic year approaches, a steady stream of new students are arriving to KAUST. Orientation activities will be in full swing. See the schedule below for a few film screenings as well as the exciting annual Orientation Expo and Bazaar.

Desert Seas
Screening and Presentation by Dr. Michael Berumen

Discovery Theater, Discovery Square

The documentary Desert Seas was created for National Geographic by Saudi Aramco and renowned Icon Films (creators of the hit series, River Monsters); it showcases the dazzling Red Sea and the wondrous Arabian Gulf. This stunning film was also aided by tremendous
support from our very own Red Sea Research Center. Also showing will be Guardians of the Red Sea, the story of the first-ever joint research project between the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, filmed during the Fall of 2009. This screening is presented by Dr. Michael Berumen, Associate Professor of Marine Science and Engineering at KAUST. Professor Berumen served as one of the scientific advisors during the creation and production of the film. The screening is part of Orientation 2017 and is sponsored by Graduate Affairs.

Opening of the “Discover Saudi Arabia” Exhibition

Lobby, University Library

This exhibition was originally displayed during the 2017 Winter Enrichment Program and focuses on a number of sites with great archaeological and historical interest in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Photographs have been kindly donated by several photographers from within the University, and the exhibition will also include photos from members of the Society for Archaeology and Anthropology, a graduate student-led group. This exhibition is being shown in the Student Center as part of Orientation 2017 and is sponsored by Graduate Affairs.

This world-famous film follows the well-known actor Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. Opening of New Graduate Student Art Exhibition

Join us for the opening of the New Graduate Student Art Exhibition with a display of artwork by our new graduate students. Organized by The Art Perspective, a graduate student-led group. The Exhibition will be held until Tuesday, August 15th, 2017. The event is part of Orientation 2017 and sponsored by Graduate Affairs.

Movie Screening

Arabia reveals a unique culture, a history full of adventure, an environment of extreme challenges, and a people of strong faith. This landmark film combines historical recreations and contemporary scenes of everyday life in following the story of Saudi Arabian film student, Hamzah Jamjoom, as he returns home from Chicago’s De Paul University to
explore his native culture. As Hamzah discovers the roots of his people’s ancient traditions, he reveals how Saudi Arabian society developed through history into what it is today. Arabia reveals a visually striking world of fascinating heritage. Light refreshments will be provided. This screening is part of Orientation 2017 and is sponsored by Graduate Affairs.

Orientation Expo & Bazaar
Thursday, August 17, 2017

Orientation Expo: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Levels 3 and 4, Student Center

Orientation Bazaar: 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Student Plaza, Student Center

The Orientation Expo and Bazaar will include over 60 booths of graduate student groups, professional associations, and a wide selection of KAUST offices and services from on campus. There will be a “Taste of KAUST” section with booths from all of the retail and food outlets on campus. At 7 pm there will be live music and entertainment on the Student Plaza, in front of the Student Center, by musicians from the KAUST community, as well as Arabian music by the East Band with some special guest singers. This is definitely an event not to be missed; it is now established as one of the largest displays of booths representing all groups and services offered on campus. Both the Orientation Expo and Bazaar are open to the entire KAUST community. The Expo and Bazaar are part of Orientation 2017 and are organized by Graduate Affairs.
