Deadline Extended: Lab Safety Recognition Award

The Health, Safety and Environment Department (HSE), in collaboration with the Lab Management Safety Committee, is pleased to announce the 2017 Laboratory Safety Recognition Award. The objective of the Laboratory Safety Recognition Award is to foster a culture that values research safety, promotes safe behaviors and creates a safe research workplace.

There are two categories for the Laboratory Safety Recognition Award: Individual Lab Safety Award and Team Lab Safety Award.

Individual Lab Safety Award

This award will acknowledge and reward outstanding individual(s) for their contributions to promoting safety in the laboratory environment throughout the year. The award is open to employees, postdoctoral fellows, students, staff and PTSA employees working in a laboratory.

The lab safety individual recognition award is a nomination system. Please participate by nominating laboratory member(s) that meet the following criteria:

  • Initiates and/or lead a successful safety initiative;
  • Regularly reports unsafe working laboratory conditions and works to correct them;
  • Promotes safe behavior and a safe working environment inside the laboratory;
  • Leads changes in procedures, training or other administrative controls that help improve safety within the laboratory;
  • Engages lab members in creating a safety culture within the lab.

Nominations for the Individual Awards will be accepted until November 26.

Team Lab Safety Award

This award will recognize laboratories efforts to establish, improve and/or maintain recognized safety practices within their laboratories throughout the year. HSE and the Lab Management Safety Committee will select the winner of Team Award, taking into consideration proven lab activities related to:

  • Lab safety performance;
  • General improvements in laboratory safety;
  • HSE training compliance and;
  • Exceptional safety practices.
