KAUST celebrates World Environment Day 2022

#OnlyOneEarth

The year of 2022 marks 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, widely seen as the first international meeting on the environment, which motivated the formation of environment ministries and agencies around the world. This historical milestone linked environmental protection and poverty alleviation ultimately paving the way for the current Sustainable Development Goals.

This year, in early June, the Stockholm+50 international meeting will be held in Sweden, a few days before World Environment Day (WED). It’s time for bold choices. It’s time for urgent action. It’s time for a better future on a healthy planet. We have #OnlyOneEarth, let’s take care of it.

KAUST is a home to a unique and thriving ecosystem that needs our protection and appreciation. This includes 110 hectares of mangrove forest, more than 240 species of birds, about 1 million m2 of parks and trees, and much more to explore.

As an institution that contributes to securing our planet through scientific education, fostering sustainability-driven discoveries, and investing in ecotechnological innovation, we ask you to join us in celebrating this year’s WED and reflect on your daily actions and what can you do in your household and in your community, to preserve and protect one of the greatest gifts we all share: our planet.

Take some time to participate in the Environment Day Quiz and get to learn more about this day’s relevance in today’s world. The first top-ranked submissions will receive a surprise gift. The winners will be contacted by the Office of Sustainability.

You can also show your KAUST nature pride by using these inspiring local biodiversity images taken by KAUST community members on your phone or computer’s background or screensaver.
