The Office of the Arts invites interested community members to participate in its three community music groups; the Orchestra, the Chorus, and the newly formed Angklung Ensemble.
The Orchestra group consists of individuals with previous experience in playing musical instruments; a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass) or a wind / brass instrument (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, or trumpet). Interested community members should schedule an informal interview by contacting the Office of the Arts The Orchestra group meets Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m.
The Chorus consists of community members with previous knowledge of music reading; however, its main objective is the enjoyment of singing in an ensemble. The Chorus rehearses Tuesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m.
The Angklung Ensemble held an introductory workshop during the recent WEP. The Angklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made of bamboo tubes that are attached to a frame. Each angklung has a specific pitch that can be produced by shaking the angklung. Each member of the ensemble is responsible for one or two pitches. By playing all the notes together, the ensemble creates a complete song with harmonies. All musical levels are welcome; it requires only teamwork to achieve a meaningful musical experience. The Angklung Ensemble group rehearses Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
All three groups begin rehearsals the last week of February to prepare for this semester’s Community Concert, scheduled for Monday, April 14.
