Maps, Data and More: an Introduction to GIS

KAUST IT is pleased to invite you to the upcoming GIS Workshop, to go beyond the map and discover the full capability of GIS. The workshop will be a five-day dive into the world of GIS and cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to GIS
  • Types of Maps
  • Exploring Data in Maps
  • Raster Data
  • GIS Analysis.

Each day is required and will build upon previous lessons learned, so you must attend the full duration of the course. There are activities and assignments each day to connect what you have learned with live hands-on experience. (Please note: You will not need ArcGIS pre-installed on your machines.)

What is GIS

GIS is a database system that analyzes data to show spatial patterns and distributions. At KAUST, we provide a full annual site license for Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. (Esri) software for most Esri products including desktop software such as ArcGIS Desktop and Pro Advanced, as well as web-based applications such as ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise.

What can GIS do?

Uses for GIS are wide and varying but the main component is spatial data. A great example are the KAUST community maps. Some other great uses are: land use planning, animal tracking, environmental protection, sociological analysis, migration, business marketing and much more.

Instructor’s bio

Colleen Campbell has her master’s degree from the University of Southern California in Geographic Information Science and Technology. Her project looked at drivers (terrain, walking speed, weather, violence, and nearby resources) that influence migration patterns in refugees. Colleen is interested in movement and the way it influences the distribution and behavior of species, as well as looking at problems with a holistic outlook. Her current Ph.D. research at KAUST is focused on creating using drone imagery and remote sensing techniques to map coral reefs in the Red Sea.
